What to expect before, during and after solar installation.

Installation day is one part of a solar project. A smooth experience also depends on the planning before it and the handover afterwards. Here are the main conversations to have with your installer, so you know what is happening and who is responsible.
Before the team arrives
Confirm the equipment, panel layout and proposed inverter position in writing. Ask about any switchboard work, access arrangements and likely power interruptions. In NSW, network approval is needed before solar installation; metering work can be a separate step. Check who coordinates each part and how you will receive updates.
Tell the team about pets, locked access, parking restrictions or work-from-home commitments. Agree on the safest way to keep people clear of the work area. If the design or equipment changes, ask for the revised details before work proceeds.
On installation day
The team will establish access and work areas, install the specified equipment and complete the relevant electrical work and testing. The exact sequence and duration depend on the property and project. Ask the team to explain the day’s plan, including any interruption to your electricity supply.
Roof work and electrical work should be left to the installation team. If you have questions about a detail, raise them with your point of contact rather than entering the work area. Weather and site conditions may affect the schedule; confirm any revised arrangements directly.
Before normal operation
Having panels on the roof does not necessarily mean the system is ready for everyday use. Your installer should explain any remaining metering, connection or inspection steps and tell you when operation can begin. Follow the handover instructions rather than switching equipment on independently.
Make the handover useful
Keep the system details, warranties, manuals and relevant compliance documents together. Ask for a demonstration of monitoring, normal operating indicators and the manufacturer-approved shutdown instructions. Confirm who to contact if the app stops updating or an equipment fault appears.
Your handover checklist
- Equipment models and system layout.
- Confirmation of any remaining connection steps.
- Monitoring access and an operating explanation.
- Warranty, documentation and support contacts.
